On Saturday 20th January 2024, another 60 students in 2 groups of 30 participated in their DofE training at the English School of Kyrenia, which was a two-hour walk in the mountains of Kyrenia, followed by a basic First Aid course to be completed as part of the award qualification.
This included teaching them about their safety and hygiene, CPR, choking, how to treat burns and cuts, the recovery position, and environmental situations. The First Aid course equips the youth with the knowledge they need to respond quickly and confidently in case of an emergency.
It is always a pleasure to help the children and they are always a pleasure to teach. So far more than 350 students have been on this course and all of the students taking part in this latest training session passed the assessment and details of the DofE award are shown under.

Our next training session will be on Thursday 15th of February at 09.30 am at the Girne Civil Defence building near the entrance to the Baldöken car park.
“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Scheme was started in 1956. An award for Youth across the world. The English school of Kyrenia proudly offer Bronze, Silver and Gold courses for students.
What is the DofE?
The DofE International Award is a global framework for non-formal education and learning, which challenges young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world. Through developing transferable skills, increasing their fitness levels, cultivating a sense of adventure and volunteering in their community, the Award helps the youth find their purpose, passion and place in the world.
Operating in more than 120 countries and territories, it helps to inspire millions of young people, and although the Award’s framework remains the same wherever it is delivered, no two Awards are indeed the same. Instead, each young person designs and creates their own bespoke programme, unique to them. The programme consists of four key sections, Physical Recreation, Skills, Voluntary Service and the all important Adventurous Journey.
There are currently more than a million young people doing their Award around the world, via hundreds of thousands of youth-focused partners and operators, including schools, youth organisations, examination boards and youth offender institutions.”
