The 'Transforming Girne Environmental Project', which aims to teach students the principles of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' popularly abbreviated as '3R', through teachers, has been completed. Initiated by the Girne Municipality Youth Council, the 'Transforming Girne Environmental Project' came to an end with a certificate ceremony held on Friday, March 22nd. Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul, project trainers, project coordinators, and school principals attended the ceremony.
Girne Municipality volunteer trainers
Led by volunteer trainers Vijdan Şengör (Theory) and Irene Raab (Practice), the ongoing project provided training to 54 teachers from 6th to 20th of March in 4 state schools within the Girne Municipality boundaries. Upon completion of the project, recycling bins were delivered to the schools involved in the project, namely 23 Nisan Primary School, Karaoğlanoğlu Primary School, Şht. Hasan Cafer Primary School, and Mustafa Çağatay Primary School; focusing on 'reuse', 'waste reduction', and 'papermaking'.
Project Philosophy and Objective
The project aims to critically address the separation created between nature and humans and to imbue individuals with environmental values by describing the necessary perspective with three adjectives; consumer, producer, and derivator. Teachers receiving certificates are expected to pass on these values to their students within an educational plan. Furthermore, it is planned that recycling-themed exhibitions prepared by students will take place annually in relevant schools after the completion of the project.
