AN IMPORTANT THRESHOLD HAS BEEN CROSSED IN ERCAN

Sinan Güneş, Director of the Meteorology Department of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said that a very important threshold will be exceeded at Ercan Airport with the introduction of the Automatic Meteorological Observation System (AWOS), which is installed in accordance with the standards on the side of the runway in order to monitor the weather data continuously and accurately at airports.

Stating that the Automatic Meteorological Observation System enables meteorological parameters such as ground temperature, wind speed, humidity, pressure and cloud base height to be reported instantly and accurately to the Meydan Meteorology Office, Tower and Approach Control Office from every point of the runway, Güneş said, "With the introduction of the system, Ercan Airport, which has been serving at the category 1 (CAT1) level for years, has increased to the category 2 (CAT2) level and the flights are much more It will turn into an airport where it is done in a safe environment."

"IT WILL BE COMMISSIONED WITHIN 15 DAYS"

Sinan Güneş noted that with the technical support provided by the Directorate of Meteorology, the contractor company and the teams of the manufacturer, the land assembly works around the runway have been completed and the operation phase of the system has begun, and that the system will be commissioned in approximately 15 days if the necessary trial and test processes are successfully completed.

The Automatic Meteorological Observation System, which is critical for flight safety at airports, consists of sensors that measure various meteorological parameters, data collection units and communication interfaces. These systems monitor parameters such as wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, pressure and precipitation 24 hours a day, ensuring that flight operations are carried out safely.

THE SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ICAO AND WMO STANDARDS

Stating that the Automatic Meteorological Observation System was established in line with the recommendations and standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Güneş said, "The systems in question were procured from Finland's Vaisala Oyj, which is the largest manufacturer in the world and has been widely used for many years in most of the airports in the world, including all airports in Turkey."

He also said that the Automatic Meteorological Observation System cost approximately 35 million TL, including device, material, and infrastructure works.
