Just Stop Oil - A Danger To Democracy
There is something rather dangerous underlying the confected uproar over the sentencing of the founders of the Just Stop Oil ("JSO") campaign. Let's start at the beginning.
Aims of JSO
The objectives of JSO are, according to Wikipedia, "to convince the British government to commit to ending new fossil fuel licensing and production …" No one can object to anyone having the opinion that fossil fuel production in the UK should be ended in order to help reduce climate change.
It is, of course, a totally stupid objective. The UK has a demand for fossil fuels which has to be met. Increased production in the UK would result in more UK jobs, more tax revenues and decreased imports benefiting the, currently appalling, trade balance. Banning UK production would mean the loss of all those benefits but would require the importation of the same amount of fossil fuels. Imported fuels will cause a worse pollution problem than those produced in the UK by reason of the emissions caused by their transportation and inferior blends. It is, therefore difficult to sympathise with someone who claims, in effect, that increasing pollution is the best way of reducing it! Reduce demand then production.
JSO Means
Wikipedia goes on to say of the JSO, that it will "convince" the government by using "civil resistance, nonviolent direct action, traffic obstruction and vandalism". In other words it has no arguments good enough to persuade the government to change things. It is declaring that it is not prepared to follow any democratic process but intends to impose its views by intimidating the public and attacking the cultural core of the country. “If you don’t do what we want we will stop you getting to work/ school/ hospital and we will smash up your cultural heritage, statues/ paintings/ Magna Carta”. Terrorists use intimidation to get their way, albeit using violence, sometimes extreme.
Motorway Mayhem
After 45 JSO protesters closed parts of the M25 motorway for several days, the 5 leaders of the organisation were charged with "conspiracy to cause a public nuisance". After a jury trial, which the defendants did their best to disrupt, in open contempt of the legal process, the five were unanimously convicted and sentenced to jail. The leader, Roger Hallam received a sentence of five years of which he is likely to serve 2 1/2 years.
Following the sentencing the usual environmental and other luvvies created a press storm. Around a thousand of them supported a letter to the Attorney General full of the usual concocted, hyperbolic and subversive mis-truths straight out of the Donald Trump library of Truths or the 1984 Ministry of Truth . It is noteworthy that 69,999,000 people in the UK did not sign the letter.

Conflating irrelevancies with lies
The first sentence of the letter says "This week has seen one of the greatest injustices in a British court in modern history". Obviously none of the signatories has read the Guardian newspaper recently with its numerous stories about the Post Office - Horizon scandal in which hundreds of people lost their businesses and some were wrongly jailed as a result of the disgraceful goings-on at the Post-Office. In contrast, the M25 conspirators were convicted by a jury after an open trial (which the Defendants tried to torpedo) in which all the relevant facts were available to them.
The disruption fomented by the M25 conspirators affected about 1 million people trying to get on with their daily and working lives. There was a very large economic cost and a very substantial expenditure by the police authorities. Mr Hallam will serve about one minute and 30 seconds in prison for each of the million or so people the lives of whom were each disrupted for several hours. If he served 1 hour for each person whose days were affected his sentence would have been 230 years with parole available, for good behaviour, after 115 years.
The meretricious letter goes on to suggest that the action being stirred up by Mr Hallam, in his zoom telephone call, was only to urgently alert the nation to the greatest threat humanity has ever faced, (presumably one previously known only to him thus the need for action). Had he not heard of the 28 COP annual conferences on climate change, the reports by thousands of scientists, over many years, on these dangers, the resolutions of the United Nations, the U.K.'s commitments to net zero? Has he spent all his life perched on a gantry, like a latter day Saint Simeon Stylites?
Despite stating it was necessary to alert the public to this hitherto unknown problem, the letter goes on to say that 74% of the population is fully aware of the dangers and wants urgent action to deal with climate change. Was the composer of this letter so badly affected by traffic fumes that (s)he inadvertently exposed all the lies and contradictions set out in the document?
Attack on the Jury System
The letter to the A-G is being actively promoted by an organisation called Defend Our Juries (DOJ) which is also advertising a demonstration on 3 August. It seems that the real purpose of DOJ is to subvert British democracy through its insidious drive to destroy trial by jury. In brief, DOJ tries to dissuade jury members from deciding a case on the facts and on the law of the land but, instead, to follow the criteria of “a higher plane”, one that is told to them by their conscience.
DOJ is happy to stand by the side of jury members to tell them which laws to reject and where their conscience should follow. “Acquit the guilty agitator; convict the innocent rich white man”. DOJ should really stand for Denial of Justice. If there is no law then anarchy follows.
The combination of JSO, which operates through intimidation and vandalism and DOJ, which is seeking to undermine the legal system, is deeply disturbing. Blinded by their indoctrinated woke conscience the 1000 luvvies have been, unwittingly, fooled into aiding the destruction of the fundamentals of British society from the inside.
