
"DETAILS FROM OUR HISTORY" Design Competition
Arkın Creative Arts and Design University (ARUCAD) and the Cyprus Turkish Educational Foundation (KTEV) are launching a design competition titled "DETAILS FROM OUR HISTORY" in memory of researcher, writer, and archaeologist Tuncer Bağışkan. This important competition offers young talents the opportunity to provide contemporary interpretations of our cultural heritage, following in the footsteps of Tuncer Bağışkan’s valuable work on Cypriot culture, history, and archaeology.
The "DETAILS FROM OUR HISTORY" design competition aims to remind younger generations of Cyprus's rich cultural heritage and Bağışkan’s efforts to bring this heritage to light through scientific norms. Participants are expected to reinterpret architectural details from Bağışkan’s works, particularly from his book "Contemporary Interpretations of Ottoman, Islamic, and Islamized Works in Cyprus," from their own perspectives.
Competition Rules and Categories
The competition is open to students aged 18 and above studying in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, who can enter by presenting their student documents. Participants may submit works in three different categories: ceramics, photography, and sketches. Each participant may apply with a maximum of two works in one category only.
Ceramics Category: Participants can create works using ceramic materials and techniques with dimensions between a maximum of 70x70x70 cm and a minimum of 20x20x20 cm.
Photography Category: Black and white or color photographs can be submitted with dimensions ranging from a minimum of 20x25 cm to a maximum of 50x60 cm.
Sketches Category: Participants may submit two-dimensional works up to A1 size.
Jury Members
The jury members of the competition consist of experts and experienced individuals in their fields. In the ceramics category, the jury includes Semral Öztan, KTEV Board of Trustees Member and Art Committee Chair; Hayal Dimililer, Ceramics Teacher at Atatürk Vocational High School and Ceramic Artist; and Mümine Özdemirağ Yağlı, Lecturer at ARUCAD Faculty of Fine Arts, Ceramics Department. In the photography category, the jury consists of Mehmet Ali Serak, KTEV Art Committee Member and Photography Artist; Kadir Kaba, Researcher, Writer, and Photography Artist; and Emad Amlashi, Lecturer at ARUCAD Faculty of Communication, Visual Communication Design Department. In the sketches category, the jury includes Birgül Beyatlı, KTEV Board of Trustees Member and Architect; Aslı Bolayır, Painter and Art Therapist; and Prof. Dr. Turan Aksoy, Faculty Member at ARUCAD Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Plastic Arts.
Application Process and Awards
The deadline for competition applications is December 2, 2024. Participants can submit their works digitally along with their student documents and other required paperwork via the website https://arucad.edu.tr/tarihimizden-detaylar-yarismasi/. Following the evaluation, the first, second, and third place works in each category will be awarded and will be eligible for exhibition.
Each category will be judged separately, and awards will be given for first, second, and third places in each category. The awards are as follows:
All Categories:
- First Place: 400 USD
- Second Place: 250 USD
- Third Place: 150 USD
Additionally, the awarded works will be included in the KTEV and ARUCAD collections and may be used in printed or visual media.
The results of the competition will be announced through the social media accounts of ARUCAD and KTEV, and details about the award ceremony will be shared in the coming days.

Who was Tuncer Bağışkan?
Tuncer Bağışkan was a Cypriot Turkish researcher, writer, and historian known for his pioneering work in preserving and promoting Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage. Especially recognized for his in-depth research on Ottoman-period architecture and stonework, Bağışkan authored numerous valuable works on Cyprus’s historical buildings, art history, and archaeological sites. His studies are a significant resource for understanding and preserving Cyprus’s cultural fabric.
The book "Contemporary Interpretations of Ottoman, Islamic, and Islamized Works in Cyprus," written by Tuncer Bağışkan, examines the Ottoman period and Islamic cultural heritage of Cyprus from a modern perspective. The book presents contemporary interpretations of buildings constructed during the Ottoman and Islamic periods and those Islamized during these times, deeply exploring their historical and cultural contexts. The work is considered an important resource for history and culture enthusiasts.
