25th TÜRKSOY Opera Days Starts With Bellapais Concert Today

TÜRKSOY Opera Today at Bellapais Monastery and Tomorrow at Othello Castle,

The 25th TÜRKSOY Opera Days event will commence with a concert at the Bellapais Monastery in Girne on Thursday evening, September 19. This traditional event features opera artists from the Turkic world, with a representative opera artist from the TRNC participating each year. 

The event is sponsored by the TRNC Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, in collaboration with the Republic of Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, TÜRKSOY, and the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet,  The concert at Bellapais Monastery on September 19, 2024, will be followed by the final concert in the TRNC at Othello Castle in Gazimağusa on Friday evening, September 20, and concluding with a closing concert in Ankara on September 25, 2024.

Mezzo Soprano Nejla Egemen, representing the TRNC, will perform alongside artists from member countries of TÜRKSOY, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Northern Iraq. During the concerts at Bellapais Monastery and Othello Castle, artists will present world classics and their countries' national opera arias accompanied by piano.

The participating artists include Anton Fershtandt and Nina Makarova from Azerbaijan, Yerlan Zhandarbay from Kazakhstan, Feruza Yusupova from Uzbekistan, Kamil Kaplan from Turkey, Ömer Türkmenoğlu from Northern Iraq, and pianist Iuliia Babich from Kyrgyzstan.

The 25th TÜRKSOY Opera Days, dedicated to Kamran Aziz, the first female composer from Northern Cyprus, will also feature Nejla Egemen performing Kamran Aziz's song "Al Yemeni Mor Yemeni" and the Habanera aria from the opera Carmen.

Nejla Egemen began singing opera at the age of 15 and graduated from the Department of Violin at Nicosia Anatolian Fine Arts High School. She later graduated in 2017 from the Near East University Faculty of Education, specializing in Music Teaching. Egemen is currently continuing her education in the Voice Department at Ankara University State Conservatory, where she started in 2022.

The concerts at Bellapais Monastery and Othello Castle, starting at 20:00, will be open to the public and free for art enthusiasts.

The Theatre Groups of Girne Municipality will perform "Shakespeare's Ghost" again, this time in Lefkosa. The play, which has received intense interest from the audience since its first performance, will be staged at Lefkosa Atatürk Cultural Centre on Thursday, April 18th, at 20:30. In the announcement made by the Theatre Groups of Girne Municipality, it was mentioned that art enthusiasts who want to watch the play can obtain their tickets from the website www.kibrisbiletcim.com. The play "Crocodile Fire" will be performed in Girne on 26th and 27th April. The Turkish actress, Hazar Ergüçlü, is in the starring  role. She is famous in Turkey for her part in the series titled "Pearl Drops."  The play is sponsored by Girne Municipality and Birinci Global in collaboration with Kamacı Group, Özmerhan Group, Rocks Hotel, Uptown Hotel, and Girne American University.  The play will be performed at Girne American University Spectrum Hall, starting at 20:00 pm. Girne Municipality, Social Affairs Branch Directorate, has announced that half of the revenue from the play will be donated to the Champion Angels Foundation, and the other half will be donated to Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre.
