Returning to my old home in Nicosia what a surprise I had
By Eren Erdogan from Australia
I attended the opening on 9th October 2018 of a little cultural house by the North Nicosia Mayor, which happens to be my family house in Nicosia.
Now owned by two beautiful natured and looking sisters who renovated the house to its former glory and turned it into a beautiful small boutique accommodation and cultural cafe kitchen. It’s now called “İskemleci” (Cypriot chair maker) and it’s located at 50 Mahmut Paşa Sokak Nicosia.
The İskemleci family is well known as Öke family and had their share of bad fortune loosing family members within a short time frame. The most notable of my childhood friends Mehmet Öke the father of the girls, current owners Melos and Gulfer Öke bought the house from us over ten years ago.
It was great to see my old home in its former glory. I had a heavy heart walking around in this little three-bedroom house. Memories flooded in, pieces of my mum's old dresser my own metal single bed (Garyola) was a few of the items that had been kept.
Overall all, I am so happy to see part of my life and my childhood was back. I also had other neighbouring childhood friends there Kemal Hasan, Özkan Öke, Nermin Anıl, Aydın Erhuy, Abdullah Özbengü CY and lot more faces that were familiar which I couldn’t remember the names. Some spoke about our fun and crazy memories. It was a memorable and great occasion to be there that night.
Congratulations to Melos and Gülfer Öke and well done you beautiful girls.
