EXXPORT with Divine at the Soulist Coffee & Music House

Memphis Soul Club Scene with the band EXXPORT at the Soulist Coffee & Music House, Alsancak...

From Roland Eyerich....

The band EXXPORT guested at the Soulist Coffee & Music House on 26th of October and celebrated the premiere with their first live performance. "Memphis Soul Club Scene meet The Soulist Coffee & Music House“.

This feeling already came up during EXXPORT's sound check. Still with the accompanying nervousness, after all it was the band's premiere with the singer Divine (from Zimbabwe).

The ‘Soulist’ slowly filled up and many curious people who didn't know the band yet came along. And then with the first song ‘I wanna feel good’, the cover of the South African singer Lira, the nervousness was gone. Right after the first few minutes, the band took command of the stage. It was that soulful, atmospheric voice from Divine that had already impressed on ‘I wanna feel good’.

Then something magical happened - a kind of club atmosphere arose, reminiscent of the Memphis soul scene... The band's repertoire: ‘Classic Motown Funk and Soul’ - interpretations of Fugees/ Roberta Flck, Nina Simone, Sade, Amy Winehouse, Teddy Swins or Curtis Mayfield were skilfully incorporated into EXXPORT's playlist. But the SOUND in the Soulist Coffee & Music House, the small music hall in Northern Cyprus, is also unique... That's what makes ‘The Soulist’ so special.

Throughout the evening, it became clear that the band was carried by Divine's extraordinary voice and her way of interacting with the audience. Divine was the main act.

Divine presented the classics in an unusual way, with so much feeling and emotion and took the audience with her..... Whether Anita Bates ‘Sweet Love’ or Fugees ‘Killing Me Softly’, Nina Simone's ‘Feeling Good’ or Amy Winehouse's ‘Mercy’...

Wow... what an amazing voice Divine has.... Hey and I felt good that night... Well interspersed was also an original ‘Sunshine’ written by  Evander Soner Keskinal ... At the end of the show the tempo was picked up again with Sade`s ‘Smooth Operater’.

What a great show at Soulist

Then the dancing started - but slowly this great night came to an end with Al Green's ‘Let's Stay Together’, Begging by Amy Winehouse and ‘What You Want to do for Love’ by Bobby Caldwell and then the encore, the real highlight of the evening, the a Capella version of the Chris Stapelton hit ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ (actually a country song) - but with Divine in a gospel version.

That was a successful premiere of EXXPORT at ‘The Soulist’ - for the future, however, there needs to be better coordination between the band and Divine... Rehearsal is the magic word here in Cyprus , that's what I wish for the band and also for lovers of this kind of music - and of course more concerts at ‘The Soulist’. The next Gig will be Friday 22nd of November at the „Soulist“

The Band`s Motto: „We gane funk with you – We gonna Funk all night – Ain`t Nothing wrong or right – We gonna funk till morning light“
