Gazimağusa Municipality Is Fighting Wetland Mosquitoes

Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Municipality has been fighting mosquitos larvae in wetlands since February, in addition to its efforts to eliminate the source points where flies can breed throughout the year in the fight against mosquitoes.

A wide area such as Çanakkale Pond and Gülseren Pond, stream beds, reed areas, open wells and garden irrigation pools, other pools and puddles in constructions are sprayed using larvacide drugs that are compatible with the environment.

The gambusia fish, which eats the larvae that the Health Branch teams have previously released into the Çanakkale Pond, also plays an extremely important role in the fight against mosquitoes. In addition, in Gülseren Pond and Çanakkale Pond, in cooperation with the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities, the dense reed areas that form the basis for the reproduction of larvae were cleaned, while in collaboration with the district governorship, cleaning work was carried out to ensure the flow of water in the stream beds.

Action being taken

The teams, which check the sewage pumping stations every week, also completed the spraying of the water cistern, the water channel next to the MTG field, and the water drains in the Great Industrial Zone, Tuzla District, Famagusta Suriçi. In addition to larvacide spraying, manhole spraying is also routinely carried out within the framework of the program determined for each region, and the general fight against the pest is continued. From mid-March, herpes spraying will also be carried out with mobile vehicles.

Gazimağusa Municipality Health Branch Supervisor İlke Soyer noted that the teams working to detect and eliminate the points that are the ground for the reproduction of the larvae in every place where there is an uncontrolled puddle during the winter period have focused their efforts on the fight against larvae since February, and that they aim to get effective results in the fight against larvae. Soyer said that our people are making great efforts to have a trouble-free summer, and that every point of the ponds is sprayed with biological drugs that do not pose a threat to natural life and are compatible with the environment.

Request for the public to help combate the mosquitoes

In addition to the struggle in wetlands, Soyer called on the people of the city to be careful not to leave open puddles in their living spaces in order to prevent the reproduction of mosquito larvae. Soyer emphasized that mosquito larvae reproduce in stagnant puddles formed in places such as leaving the tank covers open in the houses, buckets and tires, and that the people of the city can contribute to the fight by paying attention to these elements.
