Girne Municipality Theatre Groups continue their 2023-2024 season with 4 different plays. Throughout the month of December, the plays 'Mozart and Salieri', 'Pygmalion: A Democracy Musical', '8 Women', and 'The Snow Queen' will be staged at Girne Municipality Chamber Theatre. As of Monday, December 4th, new regulations will ban heavy vehicles going East-West on Semih Sancar Street between 16.30 and 19.00 hours. This will affect all trucks, trailers work machines, and similar heavy vehicles. Drivers who do not comply with the law will be fined 18,103 TL (eighteen thousand one hundred three Turkish Liras) and 15 penalty points. The map below shows the route affected. The Martyrs of Ozanköy were commemorated on 22nd November with a ceremony held in front of the Ozanköy Martyrs Monument. The ceremony was attended by Haşim Yücel, Deputy Mayor of Girne Municipality, Cemal Özcemoğlu, Governor of Girne,  Colonel Çetin Sarphan on behalf of the Turkish Cyprus Peace Forces Command, Coast Guard Commander - Navy Colonel Serdar Akan on behalf of the Security Forces Command, political party representatives, military and civilian authorities, and the families of martyrs. The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths at the Ozanköy Martyrs Monument in accordance with the protocol, followed by the hoisting of flags accompanied by a minute of silence. Girne Municipality implemented a punitive measure against an individual causing environmental pollution in an exemplary application. As a result of a report made by a citizen who witnessed the incident, a fine of 4,526 Turkish Liras was imposed on an individual for littering from their vehicle. Following the report, Girne Municipality's Municipal Police teams identified the person through the examination of camera records and imposed a fine at a rate of 1/4 of the minimum wage for the offense of 'Creating Environmental Pollution.' Necat British College students visited 'Zeytinlik Village House' as part of the 'Cyprus Week' activities held at their school. Girne Municipality took another significant step in the traffic project it initiated for regulating urban traffic and ensuring pedestrian safety.  Following the transition to a dynamic intersection (smart signalling) within the traffic project, pedestrian lights were activated in Rauf Raif Denktaş Square. The smart signalling project, completed by Girne Municipality, is based on technology that manages drivers and pedestrians more effectively in traffic. As part of the project, pedestrian lights were installed to ensure pedestrians can cross safely and are not affected by traffic. In addition to the activation of pedestrian lights, the stone blocks located for road junctions in the area were painted in black and white with a special layout.  This colouring helps drivers and pedestrians distinguish road junctions more easily.  This arrangement, carried out by Girne Municipality employees, contributes to the aesthetics of the city and is part of the environmental improvements. All maintenance and cleaning work of cemeteries within the boundaries of Girne Municipality continue as scheduled.  Girne Municipality teams have completed the necessary maintenance and repair work at the Girne International Cemetery.   The teams, who surrounded the entire perimeter of the cemetery with enhancing green fences, repaired the main entrance gate of the cemetery, ensuring its security. We are sharing for readers who are seeking the latest facts and information regarding TRNC with the approval of the BRS, news provided by the British Residents’ Society to their members on 15th November 2023. When we first published this BRS request of 5th November 2023 we noticed a kneejerk reaction in some social media with comments ranging from How dare they? to Who do they think they are? The fact is the British Residents' Society in Northern Cyprus has for some while been leading a lobbying campaign asking for recognition and fairness for the TRNC from the UK Government and in so doing with this renaming survey they were supporting the statement of TRNC President Ersin Tatar when speaking to Bengü Türk television when he said changing the name of TRNC to Turkish State of Cyprus would be a significant initiative when striving for recognition. The 16th Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Summit which was held on 9th November 2023 in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan and TRNC President Ersin Tatar attended the Summit as an observer.   The summit hosted by Uzbek President  Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Congress Centre in Tashkent, was attended by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Pakistan's Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar Ul Haq Kakar, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev,  President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, and President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov. The Girne  Municipality, in collaboration with the City Planning Department, Department of Ancient Monuments and Museums, and the High Council of Monuments, has completed the Girne Environmental Protection Plan Amendment Proposal. An information meeting about the completed proposal was held at the Girne Colony Hotel. The meeting, which began on Tuesday, November 7th at 09:00 in the morning, was attended by representatives from ministries and departments, municipality/village council officials, and district governorship officials, as well as members of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Architects and Engineers (KTMMOB), affiliated chambers, representatives of civil society organizations, and officials from political parties and universities.
