Thank you Çetin of Şenbaş Garage in Ozanköy By Chris Elliott…. With a lifetime of driving mainly company cars, sad to say I never developed an interest and knowledge of maintaining vehicles I was driving, as someone always arranged this for me.   Time moved on and in my retirement, I bought a brand new car and continued to have this serviced and looked after. Cars like people when they get old, need that extra care and attention and with my lack of developed maintenance skills, when problems occurred, I had to try several local garages when I needed help, and as so happens you eventually find a garage you feel comfortable with. Now my search for help and support has led me to  Şenbaş Garage in Ozanköy where from time to time I called by for help or advice which was given by Çetin Şenbaş with a smile. Seeing there on my visits some expensive and quality cars being maintained, I did feel I had found the right place to keep my car running and being looked after. These days i...

Fahri Zihni: Did we really need to have so many episodes of violence? Did we really need to have so many episodes of violence? Readers mail…. From Fahri Zihni…. Hello, Chris please would you share with your CyprusScene worldwide readers my article which was published in the Cyprus Mail,  Thank you and with best wishes Fahri By Fahri Zihni, Did we really need to have so many episodes of violence? What would have happened if the Cypriots had lived the pacifists’ dream, as opposed to the nationalists’, and there had been no fighting at all? I am with Maria Angela Holguin, personal envoy of the UN secretary-general all the way with her almost poetic open letter to the people of Cyprus about the 60+ year old “Cyprus problem”. Male politicians and officials often talk about the mechanics of inter-communal problem solving – constitutions, structures, territories, military quotas, deadlines, etc. As a woman, Ms Holguin spoke kindly, from the heart, and identified the crucial im...

60 years ago the Swedish UN attended a booby trap scene Readers mail.... From Anders Arvidsson a Former Swedish UN Peacekeeper in Cyprus……. From the diary of Swedish UN soldier Lars Ingvar Lindblom Cyprus 21st July 1964 Jeansson and me walked down to Mansoura to collect the mail. Sergeant Svensson had made a delicious breakfast. The Greek Cypriots sent a booby trap parcel to the Turkish Cypriots in Ayios Theodoros, three died and one was wounded in the blast. We are on permanent alert on the radio now. There are lots of Aiyos Theodoros type villages in Cyprus, this is the one, since August 1964 has been abandoned and situated between Mansoura and Piyenia in Tilliria area. Murder of Turkish Cypriots by a booby trap bomb Hakki Önen born 1944 in Nicosia and a fighter in Erenköy area was present when the bomb exploded he recalls the day like this. Before the Greek attack in August, we could move freely in the area. We raised roadblocks on the roads in our area. At the checkpo...

Readers mail.... From A. A. Wisley.... Just Stop Oil - A Danger To Democracy There is something rather dangerous underlying the confected uproar over the sentencing of the founders of the Just Stop Oil ("JSO") campaign. Let's start at the beginning. Aims of JSO The objectives of JSO are, according to Wikipedia, "to convince the British government to commit to ending new fossil fuel licensing and production …" No one can object to anyone having the opinion that fossil fuel production in the UK should be ended in order to help reduce climate change. It is, of course, a totally stupid objective. The UK has a demand for fossil fuels which has to be met. Increased production in the UK would result in more UK jobs, more tax revenues and decreased imports benefiting the, currently appalling, trade balance. Banning UK production would mean the loss of all those benefits but would require the importation of the same amount of fossil fuels. Imported fuels will ca...

More Pro Greek Black Propaganda From The Guardian So how did The Guardian malign Turkey? Read it for yourself here   Reader's Mail.... From A A Wisley.... "Turkish troops fired on our hotel, the invasion had begun” On 14th July 2024, a date of extremely symbolic importance in Cyprus, the Guardian Newspaper published an article by Colin Smith with the headline “Turkish troops fired on our hotel, the invasion had begun”. Mr Smith, a former journalist who was present in Nicosia during the events of July 1974, wrote of his recollection of the events of that month. He outlines the 14th July 1974 assassination attempt on the President Makarios, by the partisan group EOKA- B, engineered and funded by the government of Greece. Makarios was able to escape and later to go on to address the UN on 19th July. Whilst this speech, in English, was broadcast to the world on TV directly from the UN, the Guardian found itself unable to print a single word of that speech. It did not mention...

CYPRUS-THE MYTH OF UNITY Readers mail…. From Cem Hudaverdi, Australia.... Saturday, 20th July 2024 will mark the 50th anniversary of Türkiye’s intervention in Cyprus. Ever since the intervention by Turkiye on the 20th of July 1974 Greece, the Greek Cypriot administration, Greeks around the world, and their followers and supporters have been spreading the lie that Turkiye invaded Cyprus on that date and that Turkiye is continuing to occupy Northern Cyprus. They claim Cyprus was a united, stable, and democratic republic, they claim the two ethnic communities were coexisting in peace and tranquility, and that the place was an exemplar of national unity, compromise, and cooperation. This is fantasy and myth which may perhaps describe Cyprus in an alternate universe, a fictional universe. The proponents of that argument willfully dismiss or ignore the historical fact. Their argument lacks a legal basis, it lacks historical accuracy and it lacks moral authority. There is no questio...

Thank you Alex and JulySep53 for Buying Me Coffees By Chris Elliott…. After 10 years or more running a blog and due to popular demand, it fast became the CyprusScene.com website where many contributors came to share their news and reviews from Northern Cyprus to the world which was great as our mission statement was the promotion of the TRNC and to make the world aware of it. As our media promotions were growing, new features and apps became available which helped us expand our outreach in different formats but these came at a price that continues to grow. Increasing interest is being shown in our online e-newspaper which was designed by my beloved soulmate and partner, Margaret Sheard who died and it is my task to continue with its design and publication in her memory.  Whilst retaining our non-commercial status, we introduced a Buy Me A Coffee app where followers and those who appreciated our free online E-newspaper can leave their comments of appreciation and donations to ...
