Cyprus 60 years ago and the Hot summer continues.
Readers mail.....
From Anders Arvidsson, a Swedish former UN Peacekeeper....
Hello Chris,
Here is my article about another flash point which our Swedish UN contingent had to deal with in 1964 between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
Have a nice weekend.
Anders Cyprus 60 years ago and the Hot summer continues
During the Mid-summer severe fighting was going on in the Tillyria area and in the end, a cease-fire came after a few days and life returned to the “normal” tense situation. Ulf Sjogren, who miraculously escaped the 400-bullet assault at Selemani on June 18th writes in his diary on June 26th:
“We got ordered this morning by the radio that all of us, except the ordinary guard group, should go to Mansoura. When we arrived there we were told to go to Mosphileri. It is a Greek village on a hill above Mansoura; and , they informed us that Archbishop Makarios would arrive in a UN helicopter. There were UN units on ...

A Girne Play review of 'I Close My Eyes and Do My Duty'
The theatrical performance of 'I Close My Eyes and Do My Duty' by the Girne Municipality Theater Youth Team was a significant cultural event, held at the Girne Chamber Theater.
This play, penned by the esteemed Turkish playwright Haldun Taner, is a poignant exploration of Turkey's sociopolitical landscape from the era of the Second Constitutional Monarchy until the late 1960s.
Through the intricate life stories of its characters, the play delves into the profound social transformations that occurred during this turbulent period in history. The young actors' portrayal of these narratives provided the audience with an engaging and enlightening evening, reflecting the enduring relevance of Taner's work. The presence of council members Ali Tektan and Mete Ünal Girgen, who showed their appreciation with flowers and certificates, underscored the community's support for the arts and the importance of...

Introduction By Chris Elliott.....
Since 1974 and before, the world has been fed a very distorted historical account of Cyprus' history and who was to blame for the current division of the island between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the so-called Republic of Cyprus.
In the following video published on TikTok by the Facebook group "Turkish Cypriots Exist" in which Arkin Oksuzoglu exposes the lies and deceit that the RoC has been pumping out over the years that everybody knows but they feel trapped with and are trying to turn the clock back like the UN and their efforts through UNIFCYP with their one-sided treatment to get reunification are failing more so when the EU accepted the Greek Cypriots as sole members and placed the Turkish Cypriots on ice thereby dividing the island forever so the only way for sensible people to solve the Cyprus Issue is to accept a "2 State Solution". https://cyprusscene.com/2023/09/20/turkish-cypriots-exist-and-t...

British MP renews call for direct flights to TRNC British Conservative Party MP Iain Duncan Smith has reiterated his call for direct flights from the United Kingdom to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Why are direct flights required?
MP Smith emphasized that the current situation in Cyprus presents significant challenges for many Turkish Cypriots residing in his Chingford and Woodford Green constituencies. MP Smith noted that with the exception of Türkiye, the United Kingdom, in line with the international community, does not recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent state. Consequently, Northern Cyprus is imposed significant international isolation and restrictions on direct flights from other countries. “I have been campaigning for direct flights to Northern Cyprus for some time now. Currently, Ercan Airport (LCEN) serves as the main hub for Northern Cyprus. While Southern Cyprus benefits from direct flights, Northern Cyprus can only offer...

Readers Mail.... From A A Wisley.... Are Voters Stupid Accepting Promises?
2024 is a bumper year for elections. India, the United States, the European Union and let's not forget the UK. The results, so far, have not followed the wisdom of the political pundits. Mr Modi did not get his landslide re-election and the far right gains in Europe were much bigger than anticipated leading, now, to constitutional turmoil in France. Meanwhile, the unelected cabal in Brussels continues to dole out jobs to their mates whilst ignoring the message sent by the European electorate. After being told what to do for their own good, by the men and women in grey suits and skirts, voters have ignored their dictat.
What is going on in the United States is probably incomprehensible to anyone living east of Washington. Just how do you choose between one incompetent, bumbling geriatric and another incompetent, woman molesting geriatric? What's going to happen in the UK?
Turning to the UK, voters h...

Anders Greek Cypriots fire 400 bullets at UN soldiers and villagers
The Swedish UN soldiers Ulf Sjogren and Lars Frost were a part of the UN observation post in Selemani, one of the small Turkish Cypriot villages in Dillarga the northwestern part of the island.
UN observation posts consisted of a group of 4-5 soldiers camped in a tent completed with some rudimentary household items to maintain their cooking. Usually I refill my 15 litre water-cooler bottles at the local shop. It is just ordinary tap water from the mains. The 15 litre water bottles supplied by supermarkets also contain, basically, just mains water. I suspect (based on Coca Cola doing exactly this in London) that cheap non gassy bottled water is also just mains water but with added nasty chemicals leached from the plastic of the bottles. The price differences are, though, astounding. The cost of water....
● Mains water direct from the Belediyesi, per tonne 20TL
● 15 litre refills (including new caps), per tonne 1,333TL
● 15 litre bottles from supermarkets, per tonne 6.467TL
● 1.5 litre bottles of still water, per tonne 13,333TL
The gross mark-up on 1.5 litre bottles of water (sourced from the mains) is 66,000%. That’s a pretty good margin which relies entirely on our laziness and empty headedness.
But that profit is not enough for me....

The Mayor of Girne, Murat Şenkul, directed a series of questions to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources regarding the water issue that has been ongoing since June 4th.
Mayor Şenkul raised questions regarding the malfunction at the Geçitköy Pump Station, which has been causing problems since June 4th and was, reportedly, resolved last week according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Şenkul stated that much less water has been provided compared to before the malfunction occurred despite the ministry’s claims that the issue had been resolved. "Less Water Than Before the Malfunction"
Şenkul pointed out that the workers responsible for delivering water to the regions have been working continuously for 8 days with only a few hours of sleep. Despite this, there are still specific streets and complexes in the center of Girne that have not been provided with water, and in areas where water does reach, it is being supplied intermittently. Dear friends,
I hope you have had a good spring. Here in England, we have been starved of good weather, but we will be going to beautiful Cyprus soon, so we are happy! We also went to Singapore in February, an extraordinary country where everything looks great and works perfectly, and where, for a tiny island, an excellent balance has been kept between nature and the built-landscape. Bringing you the Truth of Cyprus
As I wrote last time, my objective with the Cyprus Mail articles has been to bring to attention many truths about the Cyprus conflict which are not widely known or understood, and do so with honesty and fairness to both Greek and Turkish communities. I hope these articles will make a contribution to improving the lives of all Cypriots and their relationships with each other. Recently, I have also written about the appalling situation in relation to Gaza and Israel.
