The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye made a statement regarding the United Nations Security Council Resolution no 2723 (2024) on the extension of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in the Island of Cyprus. It was noted “ We fully support the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) concerning Resolution 2723 (2024) on extending the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in the Island of Cyprus (UNFICYP) for one year, adopted by the United Nations Security Council on 30 January 2024. Contrary to the established practice of the United Nations, the consent of the Turkish Cypriots was, yet again, not sought during the mandate extension of the Peacekeeping Force. We make use of this occasion to draw attention to the fact that UNFICYP is able to continue its activities in the territory of the TRNC due to the goodwill of the TRNC authorities. We underline the need for a legal basis for the continua...

President Ersin Tatar made a statement to the press following his two-hour meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, at the TRNC Presidency. The President stated that during the meeting, he briefed Cuellar on the history of the Cyprus issue, which has been an international problem for many years, and explained what happened on the island and the injustices suffered by the Turkish Cypriot people. Tatar emphasised that there are two states in Cyprus and to find a common ground between the parties in Cyprus, the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots should be confirmed. The President further stated that efforts to find a solution on a federal basis during the years of negotiations have been in vain, and stressed that the Greek Cypriot side does not want to share the wealth and administration of the island with the Turkish Cypriots on the basis of equality. Tatar also added that the existing sovereignty o...

TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement     United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2723 (2024) extending the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until 31 January 2025, for a period of one year, has been adopted on 30th January 2024. Presence of United Nations Peacekeeping Force has reached its 60th year in Cyprus, which was established with Resolution 186 of the United Nations Security Council dated 4 March 1964.  Throughout this time, UNFICYP has failed to adhere to the fundamental principles it is meant to abide by, such as equal treatment to both sides on the island, as well as finding fair solutions to disputes. Furthermore, UNFICYP has become the guardian of the status quo on the island, which is considered unsustainable by all relevant parties. The main factor enabling the United Nations Peacekeeping Force to operate within the borders of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is the good-willed cooperation of our authorit...

Readers Mail…. From Caz Franks…. Tatlisu…… Hi Chris, would you be able to help me by doing an article on " Construction workers walking on the roads at night who are in great danger" I live in Tatlisu where there have been so many near misses as people tend to walk on the Esentepe/Tatlisu road in dark clothes and not holding torches or lamps. I have written to all of the Construction companies nearby to ask them to assist in raising awareness of the danger and there is a marked improvement. But not enough! Do walk onto incoming traffic with a torch on or a phone torch and wear a high vis vest. A decent and clean one if possible as one day an accident is going to occur on one of our roads.  This must be happening all over TRNC and someone is going to have a tragic accident and not only kill the people on the road but it will have a huge impact on their life as they may end up in prison and if not suffering depression for taking a life for the rest of their life! ...

We Have Run Aground, We Are Taking On Water, But We Haven’t Sunk Yet! By Richard Beale…. Esentepe Rehoming Group 2024 was a New Year, New hope a new beginning that we could re-home the dogs at the shelter then maybe walk away and get our lives back Now with the first month of the year barely gone, we have been swamped not only with the rains but with dogs. Our project ran aground last Thursday evening when the Belediye brought 11 dogs up to the compound. These were 11 of 17 dogs that a lady who I believe lived in a car in Catalköy owned and the Police took them away from her as one dog was reported to have bit a child. There was no way we could accommodate 11 dogs not only we haven’t got the room we haven’t got the volunteers to care for the dogs. As you can expect tempers were high, and angry words were exchanged. As it was dusk we agreed to try and resolve this in the morning. Overnight messaging to the Mayor the Vice Mayor pointing out our position at the shelter, we got m...

By Richard Beale…. The first match after the short winters break, with a much depleted side, Esentepe came away with a useful away point in a very scrappy match. Result : M HACIALİ YILMAZKÖY SK 1 ESENTEPE KKSK 1 Saturday January 27, 2024; AKSA League 1; Yilmazköy Mustafa Üçöz Stadium. Sunny, slight breeze. Both teams should be happy with a point, I predicted this score in my pre-match, both teams have strong defences, and both teams have only been beaten twice so a draw was the obvious outcome. Esentepe missing at least 6 players through injury and suspension will be satisfied with a fought-away point in a match that did not live up to expectations. Both teams cancelled each other out, two strong defensive teams, were the winners in a match played in midfield mainly, resulting in very few goal opportunities. 6 ex-pats members of the EFES Army made the journey and thoroughly enjoyed their pre-match meal at the 3 Öz Meat Restaurant next to the Stadium. The pitch after the r...

Readers mail…. From Steve Collard … CESV/112….. On  Saturday 20th January 2024, another 60 students in 2 groups of 30 participated in their DofE training at the English School of Kyrenia, which was a two-hour walk in the mountains of Kyrenia, followed by a basic First Aid course to be completed as part of the award qualification. This included teaching them about their safety and hygiene, CPR, choking, how to treat burns and cuts, the recovery position, and environmental situations. The First Aid course equips the youth with the knowledge they need to respond quickly and confidently in case of an emergency. It is always a pleasure to help the children and they are always a pleasure to teach. So far more than 350 students have been on this course and all of the students taking part in this latest training session passed the assessment and details of the DofE award are shown under. Hello, my friends my name is Chris Elliott and I would like to wish you a belated Happy New Year and let’s just look back at 2023 and early 2024 and see what has been happening. For anybody living in Northern Cyprus or the TRNC the ongoing saga of non-recognition continues and our President Ersin Tatar continues the fight with the support of Turkey to lobby many countries for recognition and the acceptance of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an observer member of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) was achieved. However, the European Union has rejected this decision and considers the TRNC as an internationally non recognized entity following objections from the so-called Republic of Cyprus (RoC). So did the EU break rules by allowing the RoC membership of the EU?. Here are some statements made on this issue: - The Republic of Cyprus became a member of the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004. - The EU has a set of criteria that countries must meet to become member...

TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs  Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu emphasized that the definition of the Cyprus problem is “the recognition of the Greek Cypriot side as the ‘Republic of Cyprus’ ” and said, "It is never realistic to talk about the solution of the Cyprus problem as long as there is no consensus of the relevant parties on this definition.”  Ertuğruloğlu spoke at the “Eastern Mediterranean Energy Summit” organized at the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce. He pointed out that the Greek Cypriots, with the support of other countries, recklessly use this recognition against the Turkish Cypriots and said that the energy issue is one of them.   Reminding that the United Nations Secretary General has appointed a personal envoy who will begin his contacts on the island next week, Ertuğruloğlu stated that the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides have different approaches on the issue.  Ertuğruloğlu criticized that the Greek Cypriot side has desire to hear from the personal envoy that th...

The Head of the TRNC’s PACE delegation, National Unity Party MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu posed a question to the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) General Assembly.   Hasipoğlu stated that the newly elected President of the PACE, Greek MP Theodoros Rousopoulo who chaired the session, gave him only 30 seconds of time limit and added “In fact, another unfair situation here was that our elected President should have been given the right to speak since Christodoulides made a speech, It is not for this reason that in our new proposal to the UN, we are also demanding out international equal status.” The delegation also had a meeting with PACE’s Maraş and Cyprus Reporter.   According to the information released by the TRNC Assembly, members of the PACE delegation, National Unity Party MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, and Republican Turkish Party MP Armağan Candan have met with Italy’s Member of Parliament, Maraş and Cyprus Reporter Pi...

Introduction by Chris Elliott…. For a number of years, Richard Beale our famed CyprusScene sports writer together with his wife Karen have been leading the campaign to care for street animals in the Esentepe area and this is what he had to say about this very pressing issue and project. "Most reasonable minded people would be concerned for the plight of street animals and how they are cared for and here in Northern Cyprus we have a number of animal charities or self-help groups doing their best to care for the never diminishing numbers of street animals needing help. One of these is the Esentepe Rehoming Project which is a re-incarnation of Esentepe Dog Shelter. The origins of the shelter was first talked about in the summer of 2022 when the previous Municipality, together with various local businesses and individuals  planned on an old British Army Camp a  shelter for street dogs, boarding kennels, cattery, Cafe and veterinary rooms. Worked started in that summer on the...

TRNC Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu strongly criticised Irfan Siddiq, the British High Commissioner to Southern Cyprus. The Minister noted that Siddiq, who not only exceeded the limits of diplomatic courtesy, but also made a habit of exceeding the limits of decency, started to perceive insulting the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot as a virtue. Minister Ertugruloglu strongly reacted to Siddiq’s remarks and said, “Siddiq with his statements, is acting like a member of ELAM, more Greek Cypriot than a Greek Cypriot. Instead of following a well-balanced policy, due to being of Pakistan origin, he is endeavoring to look nice to the Greek Cypriot side”. Ertuğruloğlu pointed out that it was not possible for a diplomat who ignored the facts of the Cyprus issue to have any kind of contribution to the process, adding that blaming Turkish Cypriot people for not sharing the same ideas as them was not going to take them anywhere. Quoting the Commissioner’s statement that claimed ...

President Ersin Tatar reacted to Irfan Siddiq, the British High Commissioner to Southern Cyprus, who claimed that ‘the TRNC will never be recognised’ and noted that Siddiq has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of the TRNC in any way, and said “The Turkish nation stands behind us.” Pointing out that Sıddıq’s statements are aimed to upset the balances in the Eastern Mediterranean in favour of the UK, Tatar noted that Siddiq has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of the TRNC in any way, and said “There will be no turning back on the federation issue, and the TRNC will continue to exist forever as a Turkish state in the Blue Homeland of the Eastern Mediterranean, and no one can prevent this”. He reiterated that the prerequisites for commencing negotiations with Southern Cyprus are sovereign equality and equal international status. By Chris Elliott… In my relaxation time when watching a few YouTube videos, I tripped over one about electric cars and the more and more not painting a good picture. So who said we should buy them, well many countries' leaders and other actors have said it is the road towards salvation and saving our planet from the horrors of environmental disasters but are there any other disasters associated with Electric Cars? Well, it seems like it with cases of car batteries exploding and fires that are almost impossible to put out but are there any other reason for not buying them and to help you make that decision, I have included below a few videos that highlight some of the problems. https://cyprusscene.com/2024/01/25/electric-cars-would-you-buy-one/

By Richard Beale…. This came as no surprise, it was no shock for the fourth consecutive season Esentepe were bundled out of the Kıbrıs Cup 1st round, it fact they were swept aside by a very impressive Miracle Karşıyaka team. Results: MIRACLE KARŞIYAKA ASK 4 ESENTEPE KKSK 0 Saturday January 20th, 2024: Northernland Kıbrıs Cup 1st Round : Karşıyaka Şengül Törehan Stadium. Not bad support for Esentepe considering this was not a League match around 40 souls making the journey on a sunny mild afternoon. 8 first round matches were played between Super League and League 1 teams today and only one League 1 team has survived and that is Miracle Değirmenlik who is virtually a Super League Club, the “Champions Elect” backed by the same rich sponsors as Karşıyaka.. The gap between Super League and League 1 is immense in terms of player quality, talent, skill, fitness, and resources and so in this match Esentepe found out to their cost. By Richard Beale…. Results: Saturday January 20: Northernland Kıbrıs Cup 1st Round: Karşıyaka Şengul Törehan Stadium  KARŞIYAKA ASK v ESENTEPE KKSK (kick off 1-00pm) This weekend Esentepe are involved in the first round of the Kıbrıs Cup. If this were the UK for most football supporters this will be the time of the season that you looked forward to, if you were a minnow then would you draw one of the big fish, would your team embark on an exciting cup run? - here in the TRNC things are done differently. How differently? All 16 Super League Clubs are drawn automatically against the 16 teams from League 1. 8 Super League teams are given a home tie and 8 Super League teams play away. What that results in at the end of that round maybe one or if you are very lucky two League 1 teams survive to go into round 2 - basically it’s a Cup for the Super League teams. If you managed to get into round 2 then the sponsors give 20,000 TL each to the successful clubs. For the 4th successive s...
